On Sept. 13, 2012 Victor Republicans will be called to the primary ballot box to make a selection on who will represent the Republican Party as their candidate for Victor Town Justice. There will be two candidates to choose between, Attorney Michael Jones and Attorney Thomas (Toby) Reh. Over the past two weeks I have read a few “Letters to the Editor” in the Victor Post citing different individuals' preference for Mr. Reh, including a letter from Ontario County Conservative Party Chair Michael Kloppel explaining why Mr. Reh received the Conservative Party's endorsement over Mr. Jones.

As a former Chair of the Conservative Party, I can understand Mr. Kloppel's and the party's executive committee's decision as one based on deadlines and the time element involved in passing petitions and getting candidates on the ballot; however, nothing in Mr. Kloppel's letter dealt with the qualifications of one candidate over the other. This also is somewhat understandable as unfortunately, Mr Kloppel and the majority of members of the executive committee neither live in Victor nor have followed the politics of the Town of Victor so their knowledge of the candidates is somewhat limited.

I on the other hand have followed Victor's government and politics, as former chair of the Conservative Party, a resident, a reporter for the Victor Herald, a member of the Greater Rochester Libertarian Party and organizer of the Ontario County Libertarian Committee. In all of these capacities, I have witnessed Michael Jones as an attorney, the Town of Victor's Attorney and as the subject of unmitigated and partisan attacks by members of the Democratic Party, including the attempt by a former Town Board member to have Mr. Jones disbarred on trumped-up allegations which the town's own Ethics Board and the State Appellate Court's Division of Attorney Conduct found to be meritless. This was all well documented in the Victor Herald, as was Mr. Jones' stellar and upstanding conduct throughout the entire ordeal.

At no time during the several years I had opportunity to observe Mr. Jones in all of his capacities have I ever found reason to doubt his integrity, judgment, honor or respect for the law. Nor have I ever witnessed Mr. Jones compromise his principles of justice or values. In my estimation, Mr. Jones has the background, skills, integrity and dedication to justice, qualities that are critical for a Town Justice to possess. It is for that reason that I am proud that Michael Jones has received the endorsement of the Greater Rochester Libertarian Party and my approval as organizer of the Ontario County Libertarian Committee and as a resident of the Town of Victor.
