I’ve followed the Baytowne issue for the past five years. I am tired of reading letters that misrepresent the SuperWalmart issue. In his letter (Aug. 9), David Lombard invites “anyone who ... opposed to a Walmart Supercenter at Baytowne” to ride down Ridge Road. Mr. Lombard would find that a tiny group indeed.
Why? Dimarco doesn’t want to build SuperWalmart in Baytowne Plaza
His controversial proposal places SuperWalmart on land behind the current plaza with main entrances off Empire/Creek, NOT the Plaza. This land is zoned residential, surrounded by housing on 3 sides.
Why can’t SuperWalmart be built in Baytowne?
Dimarco also wants to build a street of shops in the old Tops. With a glut of empty retail on Empire, why would a prospective store owner want to locate there, hidden from the street, the Supercenter, and the current Plaza?
The people I have talked to over the last five years are not opposed to SuperWalmart at Baytowne; Walmart is currently there.
They are opposed to rezoning residential land to place SuperWalmart in an area that won’t help Baytowne or the surrounding neighborhoods thrive.
The issue is rezoning, not Walmart! Don’t be misled.
