New York State Trooper Andrew “AJ” Sperr was murdered in the line of duty 11 years ago on March 1, 2006, in Big Flats.
He made what he thought was routine traffic stop, following a bank robbery minutes earlier and a short distance away, of which he was unaware.
Since that day, his friends and NYS trooper colleagues have held annual golf tournaments in his memory.
The proceeds have been donated to several schools he attended, including St. Lawrence Catholic Elementary School, Aquinas Institute, Monroe Community College, Corning Community College and Elmira College.
Over the years, Troop E has contributed over $100,000 to these schools in his memory.
Scholarships are awarded to students planning to pursue careers in law enforcement.
