It’s hard to believe that another Fall sports season is heading down home stretch, and before you know it, those white flakes will be blustering about and we’ll quickly have converted our umbrella’s to snow brushes.
But that seasonal change matters not for high school cross country runners, as coping with such transformation is encrypted in their genetic makeup. And yesterday marked the last round of league meet competition in both the Wayne-Finger Lakes and Monroe County leagues. At Black Creek Park yesterday, Victor competed against Irondequoit, Churchville-Chili and Batavia. Canandaigua Academy competed in Center Park against Pittsford Sutherland, Gates Chili, Webster Thomas and East Rochester. In the Wayne-Finger Lakes action, Red Jacket, H-AC and Marcus Whitman competed at Wayne. Honeoye was in Sodus with Penn Yan and Mynderse, and Bloomfield, Midlakes and Palmyra-Macedon squared off with Clyde-Savannah.
Prior to yesterday’s regular season finale’s, the Penfield and Rush-Henrietta girls were tied in Division I each with 3-0 records, but the Patriots were 19-0 overall and the Royal Comets, Webster Thomas and Webster Schroeder were all 15-4 overall. In Division II, Pittsford Mendon sat at 4-0 in the division with a 16-3 overall mark, and Canandaigua Academy and HF-L were each 3-1 in the league and 17-2 overall. In Division III, Hilton sat at 4-0 overall and Batavia, in Division IV, was 5-0 with a 9-11 overall mark.
In boys standings, Victor was ranked fourth in Division I with a 2-3 record and 13-7 overall. Fairport, Webster Thomas and Rush-Henrietta all had just one loss in the division, but the Red Raiders were 18-1 overall. In Division II, the Braves sat at 0-4 in the league and 8-11 overall. Irondequoit was the division leader with a 5-0 record and 17-3 overall.
Red Creek was the only female team in the Wayne-Finger Lakes league yet to lose a meet, sitting at 18-0 and atop the Central division. Wayne was atop of the East with a 15-1 mark, and Marion was the West leader with an 11-6 record. Also in the East was Midlakes (14-3) and Geneva (12-3), in the Central was Williamson (13-4), and in the West was Red Jacket at 8-7. Next weekend, on Oct. 27, at North Rose-Wolcott High School will be the Wayne-Finger Lakes league championships where all 22 teams will converge to compete for the best-of-the-best.
