With the Monroe County American Legion baseball schedule near the halfway mark two of the top teams in the league met on Wednesday night at Webster Thomas High School, as Cottreal Warner and Ferris Goodridge squared off for a chance at sole possession of first place.
Ferris Goodridge took a one run lead after the first inning and held a 2-0 advantage after the top half of the sixth, but a two-out bases loaded double in the bottom of the inning from Conor McCabe (Webster Thomas) erased the deficit and gave Cottreal Warner the 3-2 win.
Matt Squilla (Thomas) got the start on the mound for Cottreal Warner, allowing two runs through five solid innings. Taylor Michaud (Webster Schroeder) tossed a perfect sixth inning to pick up the win, while Michael D’Eletto (Wayne) came on in the seventh throwing heat to close out the victory. The win moved the team into a tie for first place with Rayson Miller at 9-2.
“We have a great group of guys who really enjoy playing the game,” said Cottreal Warner head coach Mike Epping. “We keep it relaxed and let the kids have fun.”
Rob Machado (Spencerport) went the distance for Ferris Goodridge, allowing just two hits until the decisive sixth inning. The loss drops the team to 10-3 overall, 8-3 in league play.
“We have had a good season so far, with contributions from everyone,” Ferris Goodridge head coach Jason Rich said after the game. “We struggled to really get it going tonight, but if we can get some timely hitting he can be as good as anyone.”
Ferris Goodridge took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Mike Myers (Brockport) scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Knapp (Brockport). Myers notched the team’s second run in the third inning when he scored on an RBI single from Kenny Gill (Spencerport) after reaching second on a two-out double.
All three runs for Cottreal Warner came in the bottom of the sixth inning, provided by a pair of hits, a walk and an error.
D’Eletto got the rally started with a one out walk. Down to the last out after a strikeout, Evan Harasta (Thomas) reached on an error, moving D’Eletto to second. Tommy Mastrodonato (Aquinas) reached on a chopper to third, loading the bases for Brendan Jones (Webster Schroeder).
Jones provided the first run for Cottreal Warner with a bases loaded walk, making the score 2-1. McCabe then followed with a two-RBI double, scoring D’Eletto and Mastrodonato and giving the team a 3-2 lead. Cottreal Warner had an opportunity for an insurance run but Jones was thrown out at home to end the inning.

D’Eletto was called upon to close out the win. He came in with a fast ball that easily reached the upper 80’s and shut the door while allowing one runner to reach on an error.
The win moved Cottreal Warner a game ahead of Ferris Goodridge in the standings as both teams battle for one of the top four spots before moving on to districts. Last year’s fight for the final spot came down to the final game for Cottreal Warner, who finished in fifth just out of the post season. Ferris Goodridge earned a birth with a second place finish and ended its season with a loss in the finals of the consolation bracket.
Prior to the game members of Cottreal Warner Post #942 presented presented the colors on the infield and held a brief ceremony in tribute to persons who have, or who are, defending our country.
