Two people were rescued from an apartment building fire in Irondequoit last night, Tuesday, Oct. 2.
According to Peter Hendler, Chief of Irondequoit's Ridge-Culver Fire Department, a call for "heavy smoke in the hallway" came in about 11:30 p.m. Oct. 2 and Ridge-Culver responded to 27 Portland Parkway with mutual aid from Irondequoit's St. Paul Boulevard and Point Pleasant fire companies.
"While enroute to the call, we were updated by the dispatcher that the police reported people trapped on the second floor," Hendler said. "We were on-scene within minutes and had heavy fire in a first floor apartment and thick, black smoke in the hallways of the four-unit, two-story apartment building."
Hendler said Ridge-Culver crews immediately went into rescue mode and worked to get two people who were trapped to safety.
"We were able to get the people out the rear of the building using ground ladders and the fire escape," he said.
The fire under was control in about 20 minutes, he said.
Smoke detectors alerted the residents to the fire, Hendler said, but added that the heat was so intense in the hallway that the first floor smoke detector was melted.
Hendler said the fire started in the kitchen of a first-floor apartment and was contained to the kitchen and living room area.
Smoke damage spread throughout the building, however, and all the residents were displaced for the night, Hendler said. Five residents were home at the time of the fire, he added, and two were transported to Rochester General Hospital for treatment. Three others were treated at the scene and released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Hendler said the Red Cross also responded and is providing for the residents of the apartment where the fire started.
Irondequoit's Laurelton Fire Department filled in for Ridge-Culver until it was back in service about 2:30 a.m., Hendler said.
