Irondequoit's Ridge-Culver Fire Department responded to two house fires and an accident in about six hours Tuesday, Aug. 14. The structure fires also included response from Irondequoit's Point Pleasant, Laurelton and St. Paul Boulevard companies.

Ridge-Culver first received a call for "smoke in the basement" at a home in its district about 11:10 a.m. Tuesday.

Chief Peter Hendler said Ridge-Culver, St. Paul and Point Pleasant responded to the home with smoke coming from the basement and first floor.

Point Pleasant Chief John McGee took command, as fire crews entered the building, unti Hendler arrived.

There was a dehumidifier in the basement that caught fire and caused heavy smoke damage throughout the house, Hendler said. The home owners were inside at the time and smoke detectors alerted them to the fire, he added.

"Everyone got out ok and there were no injuries," Hendler said.

Irondequoit Fire Marshal, Greg Merrick then alerted his department to a car accident involving two vehicles on East Ridge Road, about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Hendler said.

"Damage prevented fire crews from entering the vehicle and they needed to pop the door," Hendler said.

Finally, Irondequoit's Laurelton Fire Department received a call for "fire in the house; top floor; everyone's outside" just after 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at 786 Helendale  Road.

Upon arrival, Laurelton fire crews saw smoke and flames from a two and a half story home. Ridge-Culver, Point Pleasant and West Webster responded to provide mutual aid at the scene.

Firefighters found heavy fire in the attic of the home.

The fire was extinguished, but with heavy fire damage to the attic and water and smoke damage throughout the rest of the home.

Walt Holahan of the Laurelton Fire Department said a family of five was displaced by the fire.

They suspect the fire was caused by a lightning strike, he added, but the cause had not been confirmed by today (Aug. 16).
