Construction of an eight-mile segment of bike trail is planned next year to close a gap in the 365-mile Erie Canalway Trail.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the new segment between Amherst and Lockport will go out to bid in 2013. He says it will create a continuous 100-mile bike-and-hike path between Buffalo and Newark in Wayne County. The section is to open in the fall of 2014.

The Erie Canalway Trail links the Hudson River and Lake Erie. More than three-quarters of the trail from Buffalo to Albany is now completed.

Canal Corporation Director Brian Stratton says the canal system contributes nearly $380 million annually to the economy of upstate New York.
