This year’s recipient of the Brighton Chamber of Commerce’s Memorial Award is remembered for his devotion to his family and service to his community.
The Chamber announced the 2012 recipient, Herbert F. Ross, during a ceremony July 4 at Twelve Corners Memorial Park. Mr. Ross passed away March 28 at the age of 80.
The award honors someone with a “deep sense of civic responsibility who is very active in the community,” said Chamber President Brennan Redmond.
Mr. Ross served in the United States Army in the Korean War, and was active in the 98th Division of the Army Reserve and other military organizations after he retired as major. He volunteered every year for the Armed Forces Day luncheon, said his wife, Terri.
“Everyone was Herb’s friend,” she added.
Mr. Ross volunteered for numerous civic organizations, including the Brighton Fire Department for 35 years. He was a past president of the department, as well as company treasurer.
“He made sure we were always planning for the future,” said Brighton Fire Department Chief Stephen MacAdam.
He added, “Herb Ross was a man of service — service above self and service to others. I think we are all better people knowing Herb Ross in our lives.”
Mr. Ross was twice president of the Brighton Chamber of Commerce, and received the Paul Harris Award from the Rochester Rotary Club. He was a past member of the town of Brighton’s assessment review board, and he volunteered with the Boy Scouts and the New York State Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, where he became Monroe County and state president of the organization. He was a life member of the Flower City Lodge of the FreeMasons and the Shriners. He was also a 60-year volunteer and lifetime member of Temple B’rith Kodesh.
“The most important thing in Herb’s life,” said Brighton Supervisor Bill Moehle, “was his family. ... He was an extraordinary man. He will live in our hearts forever.”
