A vehicle passing a mail truck caused the head-on crash on Outlet Road in Manchester Tuesday, deputies said. A woman from Lyons, Wayne County, driving a vehicle that was struck in the crash was listed Wednesday in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital. Her husband, a passenger in the vehicle, has been released from Strong according to hospital records.
Witnesses told deputies that a vehicle that passed the mail truck caused a driver to lose control when he hit his brakes. Neither the mail truck nor the vehicle passing it were at the scene of the crash Tuesday afternoon.
Deputies said Alice L. Stone, 72, of 16 Hillcrest Drive in Lyons, was driving eastbound on Outlet Road with her passenger, James W. Stone, 70, of the same address. Frank M. Angelo, 61, of 178 Sutton St., Rochester, was driving westbound on Outlet Road with his passenger, Mark A. Green, 57, of 400 Fort Hill Ave., 9A, Canandaigua.
A mail truck was on the south side of the road and eastbound traffic was not yielding for the truck, but driving around it. Angelo told deputies he came around the corner and to avoid hitting a vehicle in he lane, hit his brakes, losing control and then hitting the Stone vehicle.
Mr. and Mrs. Stone were both taken by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital. James Stone complained of chest pain and Alice complained of neck and lower leg pain.
Green was taken to Clifton Springs Hospital for lower leg pain.
Manchester Fire Chief Harry Bowker said at the scene that that stretch of Outlet Road has been hazardous for accidents this summer, with heavier traffic because it is a detour for construction going on at the Route 96 bridge over the Canandaigua Outlet.
“With this the main detour, traffic has quadrupled,” said Bowker. In July, there were six accidents in that area, with three requiring people be extricated from vehicles, he said.
