Monroe County Legislator Vincent Esposito, D, Irondequoit, reports that this year “is going to be a busy one in Irondequoit.”
Esposito said there are several big Monroe County projects happening around Irondequoit this year, including: The long-awaited reconstruction of East Ridge Road and Portland Avenue, water management improvements at Durand Eastman Park, and work at the Van Lare sewage treatment plant and Seneca Park Zoo.
Esposito provided a summary of some of the things residents may expect to see.
East Ridge Road reconstruction
Irondequoit’s main commercial corridor, East Ridge Road, is getting a face lift. East Ridge Road reconstruction is scheduled to begin late this spring, starting at the border with the City of Rochester (near the post office) and progressing east to Culver Road. The entire project is expected to take two years to complete.
Some utility work has already been under way since last fall, Esposito said, but expect the main construction work to begin around May.
Construction will be done in stages between the main intersections from west to east. Traffic will be reduced to one-way, eastbound only, for the section undergoing work.
Esposito said much of the work will also be done at night to minimize traffic and business disruption, especially at the main intersections.
Portland Avenue reconstruction
Portland Avenue will be reconstructed from the border with the city, near Rochester General Hospital, north to Titus Avenue. Planning is being completed now and construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in mid to late summer, Esposito said.
The Portland project is also expected to take two construction seasons.
Esposito said the goal is to complete the southern-most section, from the Rochester border to East Ridge Road, this year.
“However, that is a tentative plan that will depend on the status of the East Ridge Road reconstruction, to minimize traffic and construction disruptions between the two projects,” Esposito said.
Two-directional traffic is expected to be maintained on Portland during the entire project.
Durand Eastman Park water management
Construction of an infiltration basin in Durand Eastman Park is scheduled to begin this year and be completed by fall.
The new basin will collect excess water from a stream entering the south end of the park and provide extra time and ability for the water to soak into the ground, Esposito said.
By reducing the water and sediment swelling into the park lands, streams and swamps, the project is expected to alleviate some of the flooding on the park’s golf course as well as runoff pollution entering the swimming area at Durand beach.

In addition, grant funds from New York State will allow for dredging and rebuilding of some problematic stream banks through the golf course sections of the park, Esposito said.
Van Lare upgrades
The Frank E. Van Lare Water Treatment Plant, on Lake Shore Boulevard, is continuing a number of multi-million dollar upgrades, Esposito said, including the replacement of all 20 aeration tanks with a state-of-the art technology that is expected to improve the biodegrading process and also drastically reduce noise pollution from the plant.
Seneca Park Zoo
The zoo, 2222 St. Paul St., in Seneca Park, is in the final construction stages of its new A Step Into Africa exhibit. A grand opening is scheduled for this spring to showoff all the new attractions, including three new lions, Esposito said.
