On Sept. 18, a Monroe County Grand Jury indicted Anthony Cannella, 51, of kidnapping and robbery for an incident that occurred on August 30 in Irondequoit.

After abducting a woman from St. Josaphat Ukrainian Church on East Ridge Road, Cannella allegedly forced the woman to drive him to several ATM machines where he used her debit card to withdraw funds. The woman was later released unharmed.

Cannella is charged with one count of first-degre robbery and one count of second-degree kidnapping. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.

“Despite the fact that the victim in this case wasn’t harmed physically, Anthony Cannella’s alleged actions on Aug. 30 terrorized an innocent member of our community and demonstrated clearly that he poses a threat to the residents of our county,” said Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley. “I look forward to helping present evidence in this case and working to ensure that this woman and others like her need not live in fear of another such attack.”

Cannella is being held in Monroe County jail awaiting arraignment.

According to Irondequoit Police Sgt. Mark Bean, supervisor of the Irondequoit Police Department’s criminal investigations unit, in a release issued after the Aug. 30 incident, Irondequoit officers responded to St. Josaphat’s Church, 940 E. Ridge Road, after 11 a.m. that day for a report of a potential robbery and kidnapping.

Bean said that it was learned that at approximately 11 a.m. Aug. 30, the victim was approached by a man inquiring about the church. The man then left, but later came back and asked to use the bathroom, which he was allowed to do.

Upon exiting the bathroom, Bean said, the man pulled a knife from under his clothing and demanded money and belongings from the victim, then forced her into her own vehicle. They drove to several area locations, one being a being a bank in the town of Greece.

Within minutes of airing a photograph of the man, Irondequoit Police investigators started receiving calls identifying him, Bean said. Cannella was apprehended Sept. 1.
