As many in Monroe County are still without power, many residents say they are relieved to have avoided severe devastation from superstorm Sandy.

“Just when I thought we made it through the storm unscathed,” Dan Derleth of Irondequoit told us in an email, he looked in his back yard as he was leaving for work — and found a portion of a fence down.

It was reported that 19,100 people are without power in Monroe County, with nearly 7,000 of those in Webster, where portions of Lake and Holt roads are closed due to storm damage.

A homeowner on Quay Drive in Irondequoit reported this morning that her power is still out.

Area school districts, including East and West Irondequoit, Webster, Fairport, Penfield, East Rochester, Henrietta, Brighton, and Greece are closed today, Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Gretchen Lukhaup is a teacher in the Rochester City school district. Since school was canceled, she and her daughter, Isabel Fonticiella, 7, celebrated by going out to breakfast.

No injuries or fatalities have been reported in the area.

Although there was no significant flooding associated with this weather event, high winds coupled with driving rain have caused more than 20,000 residents to be without power this morning.

A county-wide state of emergency that was in effect for all Monroe County towns and villages, including the City of Rochester, was lifted today at 9:30 a.m. Most emergency shelters which were activated as a result of the storm were also closed this morning.

A shelter at the Dome Arena will remain open until the County Executive is assured that all affected residents are able to return to their homes. Residents who utilized a shuttle service to shelters will be provided transportation back to their pick-up location.

A mandatory evacuation of select lake shore residents remains in effect until damage can be assessed.
The storm also had an impact on local businesses, as many closed as a precaution.

Some say they were disappointed when the storm changed their plans to see Bruce Springsteen tonight. His concert was postponed until tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 31.
