As a result of impact as Hurricane Sandy moves through the area, Deputy Town Supervisor Deborah Essley has issued a local state of emergency for the town of Irondequoit.

Reports are that there are already several downed trees, including on Thomas Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard, and power lines in Irondequoit. There is a "leaning" power line on Kings Highway in Irondequoit.

"The fact is, there has been damage and there are travel concerns," said town spokesman Nate Stone.

The state of emergency means "no unnecessary travel."

In addition, Stone said, Monroe County has asked that Irondequnit Hall, 1280 Titus Ave., be a "bus transit" point to shelters already set up by the Red Cross.

Anyone who may need to go to a shelter may report to the back of Irondequoit Town Hall, where an RTS bus will be on hand to transport people to shelters.

During the storm, the Irondequoit Police Department's mobile command unit will be manned from 8 p.m. tonight, Monday, Oct. 29, through 8 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 30.

All five fire departments in town will have staff on overnight as well, Stone said, as will the town's Department of Public Works operations center.

Stone said late this morning that the town's fire marshal, Irondequoit Police and DPW officials first met this morning to take a look at the forecast of Hurricane Sandy's arrival in the area, and make plans. He said then that they would continue to meet throughout the day.

The town has also been sending crews out on a regular basis, Stone said, to keep an eye on potential problem areas, particularly along the town's shorelines.

All evening classes, meetings and events today have been canceled, including all Irondequoit Parks and Recreation offerings.

In addition, both branches of the Irondequoit Public Library closed at 5 p.m. today. All schools in Irondequoit are closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Stone said he will continue posting regular updates, including information on any downed power lines or trees, on Irondequoit cable access television, cable channel 12, and on the town website (www.irondequoit.org) and Facebook page. He said residents without access to cable or the electronic forms of communication may call Town Hall, (585) 467-8840.
