Clarinetist Julian Bliss, who has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, made a stop at East Irondequoit’s Laurelton Pardee Intermediate School last week to share some tips and motivate some inspiring musicians.

Speaking to third- and fourth-graders, Bliss told them how important it is to practice — not just music but anything you want to get better at.

Even if you practice for only for 10 minutes a day, you will start to see results, Bliss told students. He also added that he practices three hours each day — but he doesn’t expect them to practice that much.

Bliss also played a number of different pieces and types of music, ranging from Herbie Hancock to George Gershwin.

The number he performed that was most popular with his audience was “Flight of the Bumblebee.”

After Bliss concluded his session with the younger students, three clarinetists from Eastridge High School had a chance and talk with him about more technical matters concerning the clarinet and music in general.

“Music is such an integral part in everyone’s life; we are always listening to music,” Bliss said. “You can do so many wonderful things with music. Even if I can inspire one person here to go into music and take it seriously, that’s fantastic.”

Bliss has performed with some of the top orchestras in the world, including the London Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony. He has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Louvre, and was invited to play at Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee Celebration at Buckingham Palace in 2002.

Bliss’ visit was part of a promotional tour for a line of clarinets he designed in collaboration with Leblanc Clarinets. For more information, go to www.julianbliss.com.
