Irondequoit police officers, firefighters, emergency services providers, veterans, town officials and staff, community volunteers and residents gathered around the flagpole on the front lawn of the Irondequoit Town Hall grounds this morning for a solemn observance of the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S.
The ceremony started around 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck in New York City, and included brief remarks by Irondequoit Supervisor Mary Joyce D'Aurizio and Peter Fantigrossi, commander of Irondequoit American Legion Post 134.
The Irondequoit Police Honor Guard opened the ceremony and lowered the flag to half-staff.
As Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Boyan directed, a bell was tolled for each of the groups of people who died during the attacks that day.
"Taps" and "Amazing Grace" were played prior to the close of the short but moving ceremony.
