Culminating a year full of activities and service projects, the Irondequoit Lions Club held its annual year-end steak roast at Camp Eastman recently. Guests included residents of the Long Acre Group Home, which the club has been involved with for over 25 years, and the club's scholarship winner and family.
The Irondequoit Lions Dr. Robert M. Santo Memorial Scholarship was presented to Christopher Soufleris, a graduating senior from Irondequoit High School who plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall and hopes to become a trauma surgeon.
Presenting the scholarship to Christopher, the son of Jim and Dawn Soufleris, was Eleanor Santo and Dr. Eric Santo along with President Lion Barbara Genier.
Christopher's after-school activities included ice hockey, student government, National Honor Society, and DECA along with hospital volunteering, and Gliding Stars which is a group that works with individuals with handicaps to assist them with ice skating. He also spent time in Belize, working with a medical team to provide services for the local population.
Also at the steak roast new officers were sworn in by Past District Governor Ed Bott. The officers for the upcoming 2012-2013 year include Lion Bill Davis as president, Lion Bev Bloss as secretary, Lion Barb Genier as treasurer, and Lion Sal Cutaia as first vice president.
Over the summer months, Lions will be maintaining the Monroe County in Bloom garden at the corner of Culver and Sweet Fern roads in Irondequoit. This has been an ongoing project of the club since 1996.
The club will resume meetings in September at Keenan's restaurant, 1010 E. Ridge Road, on Monday Sept. 10. For more information regarding the Lions club, contact Lion President Bill Davis at (585) 544-1853.
