The Class of 2023 is climbing up the first building blocks of their education, making their debut as the kindergarten class at Ivan Green Elementary School.

While the members of the class are still fresh, they’re already learning about what kindergarten entails, including new responsibilities and new topics.

In kindergarten, the students will learn the alphabet and to write their names. Telling detailed stories and recognizing colors are also on the agenda. Learning to raise hands or waiting to speak, listening attentively and team work are building blocks, too. And for math, kindergarten students are going to learn to count and to tell time. They’ll do projects about nutrition and experiment with different art or music techniques.

When planes hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, these students weren’t yet born. The United States has been at war since they were born, which, for the majority, was in 2005. That year, Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast. Earlier that year, George W. Bush was inaugurated as president for his second term as the 43rd president of the United States. In the Catholic Church, that year saw the death of Pope John Paul II and the appointment of Pope Benedict XVI, the 265th pope. And later in the year the Class of 2023 was born, the trials of Saddam Hussein began. To finish off the year, a second of time was added — a leap second.

By the time the students hit the stage to move their tassel to the left, it will be 2023 — a year used in many films as a time of the future, including in the feature film “Click.”

It may seem like a long way off, but as parents and recent graduates said in June, kindergarten was only yesterday.
