The question
Are there plans for the former car dealership buildings on East Ridge Road, just east of the intersection of Kings Highway?

The answer
LA Fitness, a chair of health and fitness clubs in the U.S. and Canada, brought an application for preliminary and final site plan approval to demolish the existing structures at 1600 and 1612 E. Ridge Road to the Irondequoit Planning Board at its workshop meeting tonight, Monday, Aug. 8.

LA Fitness is seeking the approvals to build a 45,000 square foot facility on the site, and to make related site improvements.

Irondequoit Supervisor Mary Joyce D’Aurizio said it’s her understanding that the facility would include basketball courts and a pool.

The first LA Fitness club opened in late 1984 in Covina, Cal., and the company has grown steadily since then. Just this year, five clubs have opened: Two in Atlanta, Ga., two in Ontario, Canada, and one in Marina Del Ray, California.

Before taking any action on the proposal, the Irondequoit Planning Board will be holding a public hearing on the LA Fitness application at its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at Irondequoit Town Hall, 1280 Titus Ave., Irondequoit.

The buildings on East Ridge Road have remained vacant since earlier this year, when the Ideal Nissan car dealership moved from site to a new, $4.5 million facility on West Ridge Road in Greece.
