Why they’re in the news
The Nu-Look Collision Center in Irondequoit was named the January Business of the Month by the Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes commitment to and involvement in the community.

Nu-Look took over the former Cristo Collision location in Irondequoit 13 years ago, but has been in business in the greater Rochester area for more than 30 years.

How did you get into this line of work, Paul Zelter?
“We (the five partners) all worked here and bought the business from the previous owner when he retired three years ago. I’ve been at the Irondequoit location since it opened and with Nu-Look for 16 years. I always had an ambition to own my own business, so when the opportunity came up, we (the partners) thought, ‘Why let someone else take our dream?’

"Today, I oversee the daily operations, but as an owner, it does put things in a different perspective!”

What are the company’s specialties?
“We primarily do collision repairs,” Zelter said, “and our philosophy is that anyone can do a decent job of repairing a car, but what sets us apart is our customer service and experience. We want our customers to walk in, hand us the keys, and not have to worry about anything else.”

The Irondequoit center also does detailing and doll-ups by appointment.

They also have a Hertz car rental office; a full-service mechanical shop, Anthony’s Service; and Cristo Towing on-site.

Zelter said the Irondequoit center services mostly clients from Irondequoit, Greece and the city of Rochester, but they also see a fair number of commuters, like people who work for Rochester General Hospital (nearby).

Have you made changes in the company?
“We’ve invested in new equipment and the education of our staff," Zelter said. “We also recently purchased the property here in Irondequoit ... and opened a new shop in Hornell.”

How is Nu-Look involved in the community?
“We’ve been a sponsor of National Night Out (an annual crime prevention rally) in Irondequoit for 10 years and work closely with the Irondequoit Police Department,” Zelter said. “We do repairs to their police cars and the town’s light duty highway vehicles and fix the police department’s community bus.”

The Irondequoit center also works with the local fire departments and has been a sponsor of the Sea Breeze Fire Department drill team. It supports the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester.

“It’s not always about the publicity; sometimes we just do something because it makes us feel good.” For instance, employees are cooking a dinner at Ronald McDonald House this month.

How many locations do you have?
“We currently have nine centers, on Monroe Avenue in Rochester and in Fairport, Gates, Bergen, Henrietta, Canandaigua, Webster and Hornell, in addition to Irondequoit,” Zelter said.

What are your plans for the future?
“We’re always looking to expand, but in the right markets at the right time,” Zelter said. “We realize we have to have the right people.”

What else do you want the community to know about Nu-Look?
“We have a lot of female estimators and managers, which isn’t the norm in the industry, but the reason is that we have a lot of female customers,” Zelter said.

“We’re normally busier in the winter, but we’re finding that the highs and lows even out so we’re steady year-round.

"We also just recently won the Rochester’s Choice award for best collision repair for the 10th year.”
