  • Lt. Col. Edward S. Whitaker, a professor of military science at Rochester Institute of Technology, spoke at this morning's Veterans Day ceremony in Irondequoit.
"Today is a day of thanks – for all those who have served in war and in peace time," Whitaker said. "The power of thanks goes a long way."
"There are 23 million of us (veterans) out there," Whitaker reminded people.
The ceremony was the 85th annual Veterans Day observance hosted by Irondequoit American Legion Post 134.
Post Commander Elmer Brown thanked the veterans, police and fire departments, public officials and Scouts who came out of the event.
Brown also noted that this year's event, open to the community, attracted one of the largest crowds that he can remember.
Master of ceremonies for the event was Post 134's second vice commander, Alexander Johnson.
Tyler Cutting and Nate Hauk of Irondequoit High School played "Taps." Piper Les Carr led the procession and played "Amazing Grace." Sarah Widera Pilato say the National Anthem.
