On an occasionally gray and rainy afternoon, even the sun appeared for the first-ever Eagles’ Charitable Challenge yesterday, Thursday, May 23. It was that kind of event: Full of spirit, camaraderie and a dedication to making a difference for others. The challenge was “born” when this year’s JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge, in which members of the West Irondequoit School District staff often participate, fell on school vote day, May 21. “Well, you know what they say, ‘When life gives you lemons…’,” said district spokeswoman Carol Crumlish. The district “made lemonade.” The brainchild of Listwood School teacher assistant Mary Beth Sadler, the Eagles' Charitable Challenge was open to all employees, full-time or part-time, and retirees in the district. An impressive 167 participated. The run/walk was held on and around the district's central campus on Cooper Road. Each entrant was charged a $20 fee, and additional donations, including a $1,000 check from the Irondequoit High School student council, poured in. All proceeds, which amounted to four checks of $1,155 each, were donated for local charities: The Josh Rojas Foundation; Team Noah Passero for the Pediatric Cardiology Fund at Golisano Children's Hospital; the Tyler Putnam Scholarship Award Fund; and the Alle Shea Project for the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation. Each of the causes is championed by at least one district employee, and all honor children in the district who have been lost. A unique aspect of the event was that like the Chase Corporate Challenge is led by CEOs, the “honorary CEOs” for the Eagles’ Charitable Challenge were 20 young girls completing a Go Girl Go! class that focuses on health, body image and fitness.

The award was presented in Buffalo and accepted on behalf of Irondequoit’s 367 registered Girl Scouts and 99 adult volunteers.

The Webster Veterinary Clinic is now owned and operated by veterinarian Dr. Gino Sementa, a Greece native who last worked at East Ridge Animal Hospital in Irondequoit.
